Samsung BD-UP5000 update
 

I got mine today. This is mine and stays in my system. So far everything works fine.

Also an email from my friends at Samsung says...

It's going to be $799 MSRP!!!

$799 is still more than the combined cost of an HD DVD player and a Blu-ray player.

Usually early combo players are better with one format, is this the case here or does it seem to do both well Lotus????

Actually it is $100 less than the MSRP of 1080p capable units.

This means it could street around $650 online.

That is a good price.

As far as I can tell it appears good at both. This isn't like DVD-A and SACD where two entirely different formats are being done by one unit. They both use the same video and audio codecs. The entire difference is in the bandwidth capability and the angle at which the BD discs are read.

I heard it has the all the proper codecs dts-HD and Dolby TrueHD but is it pure! I heard the Sony BDP-S500 has better sound?

I don't see how it could have better sound by comparing the innerds. This is likely internet mumbo jumbo being spit out by people for some reason scared by the combo player.

It appears to me to be better at HD DVD than the new A35 from Toshiba but not quite as good as the XA2 (despite using the same video chip). For BDs its as good as I've seen.

Sound wise I've been as impressed as I was with any other unit.

Unlike other combos of the past, HD DVD and BD use a lot of the same tech (codecs, etc) so the machine is actually really good at both.

This sounds pretty good. Now, if it would only play SACD`s and DVD-A`s, then we would truly have a "universal player." Then we could all sell our universals.
