Notes On CHARLES MINGUS - CORNELL 1964
This music stirs my soul like a big soup spoon. I'm very interested in your opinions. After writing this review one of my dearest friends relayed a personal story about Mingus' legendary temper at a family barbeque and told me, "It might have been better that you didn't meet him." Still one of my few regrets... (I'm not a regret kind of guy).

Is there anything worse than learning that one of your heros is an asshole?
I was just posting about Lars Ulrich elsewhere on the forum and it reminded me of that exact point. Can you divorce the personal from the perfoemance and just did the music? For me with Mingus - I can. |
Re: Notes On CHARLES MINGUS - CORNELL 1964
Yeah... it's important to divorce the art from the person or you'll never be able to enjoy anything. And sometimes the creative personality is completely separate from the everyday person. (Something I hate to admit I am proof of...)
And then there are artists who are so giving of themselves to their fans that you wonder how they can survive... which leads me to say, once again, Chris Whitley... RIP. An incredible artist, truly missed. |
