Most important... what was recorded on the tape to begin with! Take a slightly deteriorating 4, 8 or 16 track tape xfer to digital format, clean a little of the hiss without losing the high end and turn it up loud. Even put it in into 5.1 if you've got enough to work with.That can be wonderful. (Love)
In some cases I actually prefer older noisier to tape recordings to the pristine, sonically perfect digital recordings coming out today because (to paraphrase my old radio days) the artist needs to "learn how to use the equipment". It may allow for the highest resolution, best defined, presentation ever... but if it's Linkin Park does it matter? EG: Chris Whitley Reiter In vs latest LP release. In this instance Technology loses.
