HD DVD is the way to go. If you ever scratch an HD DVD disc you can get it fixed very easily with any CD or DVD repair kit. If you scratch the Blu-ray you're outta luck. Blu-ray discs cannot be repaired, and yes they still scratch despite the required scratch resistant layer.
