The timber is virtually identical as they use the same tweeters and midranges, the 809 adds the woofers and as such has a lot more bass, which is as tight and controlled as the rest of the sound. FWIW I think Canton might overestimate the frequency response of their speakers.... Even the 809's benefit from a sub. I'd love to try the Ref 1's but alas even I have my limits.....
