Yes, I do this and tolerate the cabling...
My main rigs currently runs a Sony BDP-S1, Toshiba HD-XA2, Teac Esoteric DV-50s (SACD/CD/DVD-A) and a Meridian G98DH (CD/DVD-A) I use which ever player (DV-50 or G98) for CD's and DVD-A as the mood strikes me and each other player for it's own format. It does make rack space a potential issue, but I am willing to pay that price for the best sound/video.

I think I came to this conclusion as soon as I realized that I can not find a Blu-ray player that is also region free DVD. So no matter what I do, I will need a region free DVD player. So might as well have a dedicated Blu-ray and then can have a region free DVD/SACD player.
Now just need to try to find a way to keep it neat and managable.
