Thanks for the info! I have had my 80GB iPod for almost a year, so by now its probably an antique. When I've had my "shuffle setting" set to songs, I still went to the "shuffle songs" in the main menu, and not playlists option. It did work just fine when I went to playlists and selected one, so it was an oversight on my part. However, in light of this, I would like to be nominated for the first annual AVRev SMA (Senior Moment Award).
