Re: Toshiba HD XA2 True HD Audio
The HD-XA2 has the capability of passing the bitstream of Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD via its HDMI 1.3 output to a receiver with HDMI 1.3 inputs and Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD decoding capabilities.
All is not lost if you have the HD-XA2 but no HDMI 1.3 inputs. The player can also decode the TrueHD and DTS HD internally and output the audio as LPCM over the HDMI output to a receiver capable of receiving PCM audio via HDMI, or out through the HD-XA2's analog outputs to your receiver.
First Generation Toshiba players were only capable transmitting 2-channel Dolby TrueHD, thus Dolby Digital Plus was the best audio from those players. That was corrected with the second generation players.
So, basically, HDMI 1.3 can carry the non-decoded bitstream version of the 2 formats. Any other version of HDMI can carry the internally decoded PCM version of the 2 formats.
