I would get a Linn LP12.
It isn't as sexy as some of the other more artful players out there but it is SO tried and tested - its hard to fail with it.
My buddy's dad had one growing up and we used to spin old records on it all the time. Living in Philly - we would go to the Princeton Record Exchange and buy records for $2 and $3 each and come back and play them on his Naim and Linn system. Hell, we even recorded them on his Nak Dragon tape deck when we could figure out what all the buttons did.
