According to THX viewing standards the viewing distance with a 61" diagonal screen is 6.8 (36 degree viewing angle) to 9.6 feet (26 degree viewing angle). The SMPTE viewing distance is recommended at 8.3 feet for a 30 degree viewing angle.

This also depends on the content being played on the screen. Resolved 1080i or 1080p content comes with a recommendation of an 8 foot viewing distance. 480p content comes with a 21 foot viewing distance. Also, the viewing angle comes into play. Greater the angle, shorter the viewing distance, and vice-versa.
