when I worked for Mark Levinson at Cello, we used to spool up his master tapes (note: this was mid-1990s) at 24/96 on a Nagra reel to reel.
It was SUCH an amazing upgrade over CD, it closed people right on the spot. Many of the people bought the Nagra too and some took them out in the field and used them (impressive). CDRs at the time were $10,000 for the player and $15 per disc - OUCH!!!!!
In the end - your system needs to sound good with the music you can buy today. CD is still the standard unfortunately. I wish 24-192 stereo on DVD-A or SACD was the norm by 2007 but it is the rareity.... DAMN YOU idiot major labels. 85% of your sales were in back catalog in 1993 and your sales were 65% higher. Idiots...
