A good reason to get a pre/pro or AVR with HDMI would be to have the ability hear multi-channel digital audio.
I think the multi-channel digital audio does sound better than than multi-channel analog audio.

You should hear/see a BR purchase worthy difference even without HDMI connections using your current A/V set-up.
