Don't get me wrong, I tend to agree with the notion that a backup copy for personal use should be ok as long as it is not sold or used commercially myself. Further, I think the Supreme Court will allow such if they ever hear a case on it. But many say ripping DVDs is an illegal act. I have ripped a few myself, but I find on the HDM discs the files end up too big for a server. I have gone a different way to make my HD movie files that takes about 4 GB per hour instead of the 10 to 15 GB per hour a ripped Blu-ray takes.
I doubt if there will be anyone breaking down any doors to see if you rip DVDs either.
