You realize Sony isn't the sole patent holder on Blu-Ray don't you?
There is more than 1 company with a stake in Blu-Ray.

Downloads are coming but they won't take over until the majority of people can download a HD 1080p movie with lossless audio in less than 1 hour (which means they can stream it with no waiting).
With my 3mb DSL it takes me 7 hours to download a 1080i movie with lossy audio.
Downloads have a long way to go.

Blu-Ray has been averaging 10% market share for the 4th quarter & is growing a a good pace.
I think Blu-Ray will be around a long time.
