Default Re: Kaleidescape and Toshiba Claim 1080p Upscaling Players Rival Blu-ray

The upscaling of SD-DVDs by my Toshiba XA2 on my calibrated 65" Mitsubishi CRT RPTV is simply stunning, so much so that I am ambivalent about purchasing a Blu-ray player, particularly with discs running $20-$30. And yes, I have had a Blu-ray player in my system and done a comparison of the same film in both formats. I am not blind, having just had my eyes checked and gotten new glasses which I only use for watching TV and movies. Is Blu-ray better in absolute terms- yes. Is the difference compelling - not really. For those of you with front projectors and large screens, Blu-ray may be noticeably better. For those of you with sets 42" and smaller, I don't think Blu-ray has much of an edge. I'd recommend spending the money on getting your set calibrated before buying a Blu-ray player. Having a super-sharp picture whose color and contrast is way off is silly. Just one man's opinion.
