I know many people who use Canare cable as it comes in kits and can be custom made on the spot.
The result can be really slick cable installations in a rack. Not really good for changing out gear all the often but most seriously installed systems don't swap preamps like you and I change our underwear.
My concern with these DIY type deals is that you don't always get a clean connection and with top performing cables like the Transparent stuff I use - you know its tested and up to spec.
