Actually, Linn discontinued the CD12, and publicly stated this, because they were running low on supply of some parts (I believe transports) so they didn't want to leave those who already owned it with it unfixable in the future.
What you are talking about is common to most servers, and is why all Meridian players and transports use high speed computer drives to read the disc multiple times to make sure they have the correct data prior to sending it to the DAC, and yes, it does make a lot of sense.
