When
critics talk about Peter Gabriel as a creative force and musical
genius, many refer back to his experimental, art-rock days with genesis
or his pop success on albums like So. I find this album Passion, the
music for the Martin Scorsese film “The Last Temptation of Christ,” to
be yet another level of refinement in a stellar career from a master
songwriter and, in this case, an excellent composer.

1985’s “Birdy” was Peter Gabriel’s first swipe at a Hollywood motion
picture soundtrack at a time in his career when his popularity was
surging, thanks to his creative move from somewhat edgy progressive
rock towards more pop-friendly tunes. The music for “Birdy” is a
collection of songs that include interpretations of past Gabriel songs,
as well as new melodies and compositions that are inspired by the mood
of the film.

Long before Isaac Hayes was known by Gen-X and Gen-Y as “Chef” on South
Park, he was one of the world’s most soulful solo recording artists.
His pipes extended to places that only the likes of Barry White could
reach, while his tunes and song styling made him more all-round
entertainer than mere vocalist. As a songwriter having who grew up in
Memphis, he had seen early success penning such big hits as “Hold On!,
I’m Comin’ ” and “Soul Man.”

Without
question, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon is the most anticipated
release in either of the competing high-resolution surround sound
formats. Ironically, it comes as an SACD from EMI UK. EMI US has been a
public supporter of DVD-Audio in the States. Fans of high-resolution
audio, surround sound music or, more importantly, this masterpiece of
an album, Dark Side of the Moon, really don’t care. They just want to
hear Dark Side of the Moon sound better than ever before.

There is no question that both high-resolution audio formats clearly
focus on appealing to Baby Boomers as their target audience. While
there are some great examples of new mixes to groovy old albums (Dark
Side of the Moon on SACD and Yes’ Fragile on DVD-Audio, for example),
Keb’ Mo’s Just Like You offers the SACD-empowered audience the chance
to hear the powers of Sony DSD audio technology on a more modern
recording with music that has wonderful bluesy appeal that speaks to
their most coveted listeners.
