Bally Sagoo - Rising From the East Sony/Tri-Star Music | Performance 6 | Sound 6 | Bally Sagoo is huge in Europe and India. Conservative estimates on sales of his first record were around 1,500,000 worldwide. Bally is the father of the `Bhangra Beat', born in New Dehli and raised in London, Mr. Sagoo has had a huge range of influences from traditional Indian music to American R&B. This record is way different than what you are used to. You will never hear one of these cuts on your top 40 radio station however the music is pop oriented. It has a female vocal, Indian instrumentation, modern effects like samples and a hip hop groove. It is a very interesting listen with the exception of wen the singer goes over the top with the Indian chanting on a cut or two. That is easy to ignore considering the strengths of the record. Bally Sagoo fits in well with your Massive Attack ...

Westside Connection - Bow Down Bow Down Priority Records | Performance 7 | Sound 8 | OK, what you need to understand about this record is that everything on the Westside is much better than the Eastside. Upon thinking in-depth about this topic I have become perplexed. I mean I live on the Westside of LA so that's good right? Well yes, unless you live in Santa Monica (near the beach) which means I live on the Eastside which isn't as good. In fact its really quite bad according to the Connection. It get even more complicated. Is it good to live in New York or Philadelphia in that those cities are on the Westside of Paris and London? I guess this whole Westside thing is up for interpretation.

Paula Cole - This Fire This Fire, WB/imago Performance Quality = 7 Sound Quality = 8 For those unaware of her 1994 debut, "Harbinger" the first thing you most likely heard about Paula Cole is that she used to be a back-up singer for Peter Gabriel and that the first single from this album, "Where have all the cowboys gone?" is climbing the charts. Well, both are true, but they only scratch the surface with regards to "This Fire". More a transitional piece than the wanderings of "Harbinger" this album seems to be the story of one woman's search. Yet, it's focus isn't about an end to that search, but rather simply the search itself. In this is where this album becomes magical. On songs such as "Me," "Hush, hush, hush," (featuring Peter Gabriel) and "Nietzsche's eyes," her soul searching vocals call out and take you along for a ride that explores both the peaks of pleasure and the ...
