KEF Audio KHT 5005.2 5.1 On-wall Speaker System
Introduction Huge changes are occurring in the audio/video industry. Flat panel displays are now sold at Costco and other super discount chains, having gone from high-priced status symbols to a practical and affordable option for nearly everyone. I love the floor space saved by such a display in my bedroom, but to truly take advantage of the savings of real estate, you likely need to get your speakers off the floor as well. This realization has led to a new market for speaker designers and builders, the so-called “lifestyle” speaker systems. Initially, these where expensive and sounded pretty lame but, over the years, quality improved and prices dropped just like the displays they are designed to complement. Now almost every speaker company offers at least one such system. KEF offers several levels of lifestyle systems and now they have upped the ante with the release of their new KHT 5005.2 system. Falling in the middle ...

Krell F.B.I. (Fully Balanced Integrated) Integrated Amplifier
Introduction The Fully Balanced Integrated Amplifier or F.B.I. is Krell’s no-holds-barred solution to an integrated two-channel audio system. Integrated amplifiers are often considered to be more or less lifestyle pieces. Not so with the 104-pound FBI. This massive $16,500 integrated amplifier started life as a separate amplifier/preamplifier combination. During the design process, it became apparent that the combining the two pieces would create a synergy that was not likely to be achieved when they operated separately. Krell has long been known for their large, high-power amplifiers, capable of providing some of the industry’s most powerful and detailed bass. The amplifier portion of the FBI is comprised of the popular FPB 300cx stereo amplifier. The FPB 300cx is part of the Full Powered Balance (FPB) series of amplifiers, which consists of completely discrete, fully balanced, dual differential single-channel and stereo amplifiers. These amplifiers, as well as the FBI, feature a Class A output, which is arguably the most ...

Klegg M6 501 Home Theater System
Introduction The demand for affordable audio/video systems is on the climb as more and more consumers find that their HDTV-video needs have used up much of their overall home theater budgets. Retailers are scrambling to find slick, thin solutions that work with today’s best, flattest TVs. Klegg Audio is a relatively new, UK-based manufacturer of small surround speaker packages designed to compete in the highly competitive “home theater in a box” (HTIB for short) market. Klegg as a new brand is making impressive inroads in a world where every consumer knows every brand. They have packaged attractive one-stop solutions complete with speakers and surround controllers and, most recently, plasma displays that also wear the Klegg logo. Klegg’s M6 501 Home Theater System features five beautifully tiny speakers, a subwoofer, amplification and a surround sound processor for a very modest price of $999. This market segment features the likes of Bose, Gallo Acoustics and most of the ...

Krell Resolution 2 Loudspeakers
Introduction Krell Industries, Inc. has been a mainstay in the high-end audio marketplace for over 25 years, originally gaining a reputation for designing and manufacturing accurate, high resolution two-channel preamplifiers and authoritative yet musical stereo power amplifiers. With the onslaught of digital music software, multi-channel music and surround-sound movie recordings, Krell successfully expanded into other electronics, such as DVD and CD players, Home Theater preamplifiers/processors and multi-channel amplifiers. In 2001, Krell crossed the threshold into designing and producing reference loudspeakers. Their first effort, the Lossless Acoustic Transducer (LAT) Series, was a full-on design and engineering assault, utilizing all aluminum enclosures, a complement of state-of-the-art drivers and sophisticated crossover networks. Originating with the no-holds-barred, $37,500 per pair LAT-1s, Krell forged on to create an equally impressive center channel, matching surrounds and a behemoth subwoofer, all adhering to the same exacting standards of the LAT-1s. Like other manufacturers in the field, Krell applied a trickle-down philosophy from their flagship line, ...

Krell KCT Stereo Preamplifier
Introduction Krell built its reputation on building big, powerful amplifiers with massive amounts of power reserves, tremendous transient response and bullet-proof build quality. Although the Krell name is best known for its amplifiers, Krell has also built preamplifiers since its beginnings in 1980. The Krell KCT preamplifier is the finest preamplifier Krell has to offer and is the result of the development of Krell’s best amplifier, the Krell Master Reference Amplifier. The question for many well-heeled audio enthusiasts is, does a well-engineered amplifier design translate into equally well-engineered preamplifier design? As I unboxed the Krell KCT preamplifier, the cliché “built like a tank” was the first thought that came to mind. The Krell KCT is a visually striking piece of equipment, with a great sense of industrial design and ergonomics. At $8,500, this preamp is immensely expensive although priced comparably or less than other “statement” preamplifier offerings such as Mark Levinson No. 32 (about $12,000) or ...
