Genelec 5.1 Home Theater Speaker System (HT208B/HT206B/HTS3B)
Introduction The concept of power, or “active” loudspeakers, is one the audiophile community has fought since the beginning of time. Audiophiles have been wrong in their initial fears about all new audio formats (think LP, CD, DVD-Audio and even the almighty iPod), anything to do with EQ and, most importantly, room acoustics – they are wrong about active speakers, too. The idea of a company building amplifiers into speaker cabinets that are specifically designed to power the drivers and electronic (active) crossovers that make up a speaker system are in many cases better left to people who have real measurement tools and fixed environments to design from, rather than audiophiles who have a Platinum card and are looking to tweak. And tweaking is exactly what many of us have heard from the audiophile publications as they spew their misguided sermons of ...

Grado RS-1 Headphones
Introduction Headphones are not a particularly glamorous product and are often overlooked by many consumers. For years, I have paid practically no attention to headphones or headphone amplifiers. I didn’t know what I was missing but, after experiencing the best in headphones, I doubt I will ever be without a pair of good headphones again. I turned to Tyll at Headroom, a company specializing in headphones and headphone accessories, to get started on this article. I received a quick lesson not only in headphones but also in headphone amplifiers. I used Headroom’s "Maxed Out Home" headphone amplifier, as well as a Grado Reference headphone amplifier, in my testing. The Headroom amplifier has special circuitry that provides amazing imaging ...

Genesis Technologies APM-1 and 700 Speakers
Introduction The APM-1 loudspeaker from Genesis Technologies strikes the perfect balance between beauty and performance with its unaffected and true-to-life sonic qualities. The exquisite 11 inch wide cherry front baffle, houses two 6.5 inch metal cone mid-bass couplers, a 5.5 inch titanium coned midrange driver and two 1 inch planar ribbon tweeters. Occupying space within the same enclosure is a 500-watt amplifier that drives the single 15 inch metal cone side-firing woofer. The ribbon tweeters are hand crafted using a super thin laminated membrane of aluminum and Kapton, measuring only .0005 of an inch thick. The ribbons are placed inside the speaker enclosure in a dipole design, producing sound from both the front and rear with one driver out of phase with the other. Mid-bass couplers are used as a sound bridge between the midrange driver and the subwoofer. The woofer is servo controlled and driven by the Genesis GSAT power amplifier, achieving low frequency ...
