Evett and Shaw Elan Loudspeakers
Introduction The Evett and Shaw Elan ($2,200) with the matching Flatte 50 amplifier ($2,000) is the first system on the market dedicate to high performance sound for your desktop environment. Most audio/video enthusiasts spend far more time at work then they do in the sweet spot of their high performance audio/video systems at home. With the tremendous success of MP3 audio and the proliferation of CD-ROM and DVD drives in personal computers, we are automatically outfitted with a front end for music to empower us in our personal workspaces. The Evett and Shaw Elan The Evett and Shaw Elan is the best-sounding, truly small, nearfield loudspeaker I have heard to date. When I say truly small, I mean these suckers are tiny at 10 inches tall by five inches wide and 11 inches deep. The Evett and Shaw Elans create sound through a 3.25-inch-wide, full- range speaker driver. A second driver that is slightly larger is installed ...

Escient Tunebase 2000i Music Server
Introduction If managing your CDs has gotten out of hand, as jewel cases both empty and full are found lying all around your room, the Escient Tunebase 2000i CD Library Management System is a welcome solution. In addition to the Tunebase 2000i controller, the Escient system can control up to three 200-disc CD changers, for a total of 600 CDs. The basic system with the controller and one Sony CDP-CX220 changer runs $3,000. Unlike previous CD management systems, it's not necessary to spend hundreds of dollars to program song titles and artwork from your CD collection into the system. First off, the Tunebase2000i is delivered with text and artwork for 2,500 popular CDs. If a CD is inserted into the changer that is not recognized by the system, it calls (via the built-in modem) Escient's main library to download the appropriate data. The Tunebase2000i allows users a variety of ways to play back CD's, ...

Energy e:XL-28P Loudspeakers
Introduction The e:XL-28P is the flagship three-way tower speaker system of the e:XL series. This system is priced at a very attractive $1,200.00 per pair, including powered side-firing subwoofers. When I first saw the e:XL-28P, I thought it belonged in a museum, not at a trade show booth. The elegant lines of the enclosure, with its serene Rosewood finish (which is also offered in Black Ash and Northern Light Birch), was a pleasure just to look at. However, we all know appearances can be deceiving. After sitting through a demonstration of the e:XL-28P, it had not only caught eye and ear, it had warmed my heart - a wonderful example of form meeting function. I couldn’t wait to get a pair home to review. Starting from the inside out, the e:XL-28P offers a three-quarter-inch, magnetically shielded aluminum dome tweeter suspended on cloth for superb transient response and low distortion. The midrange section utilizes a six-and-one-half-inch magnetically shielded, injection-molded ...

Enlightened Audio Designs Theater Master Digital Processor
Introduction Enlightened Audio Designs (EAD) has re-invented their popular Theater Master digital processor with three distinct versions (Encore, Ovation, Signature). Each incorporates Dolby Digital, DTS and MPEG decoders ensuring worldwide compatibility with any audio format. The Ovation ($4,449), like the one I was sent, is an upgrade from the basic Encore ($2,995). It includes an HDCD circuit and balanced outputs along with upgraded 20-bit DACs. Packaged with the Theater Master is a programmable touch screen remote with layouts of essential components like Laserdisc, DSS, DVD, CD and VCR. Teaching the Theater Master commands from other remotes is quite simple. The unit fits comfortably in the palm of your hand and is far more intuitive than remotes with multi-function buttons. The new slimmer chassis unveils a bold new diamond fly-cut faceted faceplate. The attractiveness of the unit is highlighted by the elimination of controls. Only a bright blue display panel and a power switch adorn the front ...

Energy Take 5 Home Theater Speaker System
Introduction There was a time not long ago that $800 got you an O.K. sounding pair of speakers, maybe. Never mind five excellent sounding speakers and a subwoofer, this was never even an option. Until now. Brought to you by the people at Energy, the Take 5 Home Theater Speaker System is a compact, beautifully engineered, great-sounding speaker system that can literally fit into a small suitcase. With their correct timbre and tonal balance, treble detail and integration, and impossible-for-their-size dynamics; the Take 5 with the ES-8 subwoofer redefines what you can expect from a speaker system at this price point. Listening and Viewing Tests When I first laid eyes on the Take 5 system, I found them visually striking, but based on my previous experience with micro sized speakers, I braced myself for a squawky, screechy, earbleed-inducing presentation. What followed really surprised me. No squawk, no screech no hemorrhaging. What struck me first was ...
