Marantz PM6004 Integrated Amplifier Review
Integrated amplifiers are probably more popular than ever before. Today, many companies offer a one box, convenient solution loaded with features and requiring fewer cables / less rack space, which allows for full system control with just one remote. That is not to mention that advances in design have made it possible for audio engineers to produce great sounding, easy to use products at even entry level price points. The engineers at the iconic brand Marantz have done this for many years running, and continue to do that today. There is a bit of a romantic notion of owning a hifi component made by a lone artisan, focused on “hand crafting” products one at a time using proprietary designs produced in low numbers. In the case of electronics, these products are usually featureless by design, in the ...

Belles Soloist 1 Integrated Amplifier REVIEW
David Belles founded Power Modules, Inc. several decades ago to ply his trade at designing high end audio components. Flash forward to 2011 and Mr. Belles offers everything from budget minded, but beautiful sounding entry level gear, to state of the art, ultra powerful amplifiers, and thoroughbred preamplifiers. Mr. Belles covers a good part of the spectrum, hybrid tube preamps, phono stages, and sweet sounding solid state integrated, power, and mono block amps. David Belles has quite a following in the audiophile community worldwide. His products are sold around the globe, including Asia and Europe. As a matter of fact, Belles has enjoyed a barrage of rave reviews in various British audio magazines for some time now.  Several years ago, I was in need of some amplification for a second system I was setting up and a friend recommend the ...

Aaron Audio No.1.a Integrated Amplifier Review
I don't get to travel as much as I'd like to in the traditional sense, but every piece of audio equipment I review takes me on a journey of sorts. Whether it's embarking on a symbolic trip overseas to the component's origin or into the rarefied air of gear whose price exceeds my bankroll, the paths are always interesting and often enlightening. And sometimes they are flat out surprising. At the end of J.R.R. Tolkien's “The Fellowship Of The Ring,” hobbit hero Frodo Baggins finds life in his old homeland, The Shire, no longer possible. His quest to save Middle Earth from the dark lord, Sauron, has exposed him to things beyond his imagination and broken his innocence. Too many things have happened, and he no longer can dwell in the idyllic yet naïve world of his kin. Finally, Frodo ...

Pathos Logos Integrated Amplifier Review
Pathos is an audio company headquartered in northern Italy, in the city of Vicenza. It so happens the region is a hotbed for fashion and jewelry, and Pathos accurately describes its wares as “hi-fi jewelry – small monuments.” When I spoke with John Bevier of Audio Plus Services, the North American distributor of Pathos and other high-end brands, he told me a little about Pathos' history. The company was started by three Italian gents - Gaetano Zanini, Gianni Borinato and Paul Andriolo. The trio shared a passion for audio and used their collective talents to design a new amplifier circuit, which led to the creation of Pathos' first amplifier, the T.T. This amp incorporated Pathos' own INPOL Class A feedback-free circuitry, a mix of tube and solid state that didn't manipulate the audio signal. The result was the mellowness and ...

McIntosh MA6600 Integrated Amplifier Review
McIntosh Labs was founded in the 1940's by Frank McIntosh and incorporated in 1949. Since then, the company has gone through its ups and downs, but it is still here today producing incredibly built amplifiers, preamplifiers, source components, speakers, and even high end car audio.  Through out the years, McInstosh has been responsible for many innovations in high end audio, and even owns numerous patents.McIntosh tube amplifiers produced in the 1950's and 1960's are legendary. They also produced state of the art tuners that collectors still salivate over.  To this day, the company enjoys a devoted following. McIntosh has been known for so many things over the years, including high prices, stunning aesthetics, and an air of exclusivity. But one thing above all could never be denied, and that is McIntosh products always sounded outstanding, as underneath it all, they ...
