Sunfire True Subwoofer Super Junior Subwoofer
Introduction The Sunfire True Subwoofer Super Junior priced at $995 is an astonishing achievement. The latest in Bob Carver’s stunning line of audio components – in particular a line of powerful subs – the Super Junior is a step up from the earlier Junior, previously reviewed extremely favorably in Audio Revolution. And a remarkable successor it is, too. Weighing in at 29 pounds, and taking the form of a nine-inch cube, the Super Junior is incredibly small for what it aims to do, which is to move a great deal of air. It manages this with the use of two long-excursion drivers on opposite sides of a cube, one active and the other presumably passive, driven by an amplifier capable of an exceptional 1500 watts RMS (for short periods, thanks to Bob Carver’s Tracking Downconverter amplifer technology) into the driver’s 4.6 ohm impedance. The diaphragms (they are not really cones as such) are thus able ...

Paradigm Focus / CC270 / ADP170 Speakers
Introduction Paradigm is known for building great-sounding speakers that entry-level music and home theater enthusiasts can actually afford and can definitely enjoy. Unlike most loudspeaker manufacturers, Paradigm actually makes, designs and tests their speakers without significant help from outside agencies. They have the largest anechoic chamber in North America at their testing facilities, along with enough engineers to start a "Star Trek" convention. Paradigm designs and makes their own drivers, cabinets, hardware and more. With this level of control over the design and manufacturing process, they are able to hold a top position in the highly competitive world of under $2,000 loudspeakers. The Focus v.3 is the latest addition to Paradigm’s Performance Series, priced at $299. The newest Focus is a two-way, bookshelf or stand-mounted speaker, featuring a rear-firing port. The Focus has a 6.5-inch cone mid-woofer and a one-inch dome tweeter driver complement. The Focus’ mid-woofer utilizes an all-new metallescent, polymer cone material. The cone is ...

Definitive Technology BP3000TL Loudspeakers
Introduction The Definitive Technology BP3000TL loudspeaker is a floor-standing tower with an earth-shaking frequency response of 15 Hz to 30 kHz, thanks to support from a built-in powered subwoofer. The BP3000TL is the largest in Definitive Technology’s line, measuring 55 inches tall, nine inches wide, 19 inches deep and a stout 155 lbs. per speaker. They are available in either piano-gloss black or cherry finish, and sell for $4,500 and $4,700 per pair, respectively. The BP3000TL has a bipolar design with two front-firing six-and-a-half-inch cast-basket bass/midrange drivers, and a front-firing one-inch aluminum dome tweeter. The rear of the speaker features an array of drivers identical to the front, the essence of the bipolar design. The BP3000TL has an integrated 18-inch subwoofer powered with an internal 1000-watt MOSFET power amplifier. The cabinets are constructed and braced with MDF. This ultra-rigid high-density Medite material is used for the front baffle in an effort to minimize cabinet resonance that can ...

Energy Connoisseur C5 Loudspeakers
Introduction The Connoisseur C5 is the smallest floor-standing speaker in the seven-speaker lineup that makes up the new Energy Connoisseur line. The Connoisseur series utilizes much of the technology pioneered in Energy’s flagship Veritas speaker line. The Connoisseur C5 retails for $750, with the remainder of the line value priced as well. As a basis for comparison, the similarly configured and appointed B&W CM4, to which the C5 bears a striking resemblance, retails for twice the price. The five-speaker offerings in the Connoisseur line come in either Black Ash or Canadian Maple finishes over an MDF (medium density fiberboard) enclosure. I found the Canadian Maple finish of my review sample to be gorgeous and better-looking than darn near any other speaker in this price range. The C5 cabinet is 36 inches high, 7.75 inches wide and 15.5 inches deep. The front of the speaker bears a strong resemblance to the recently-reviewed B&W CM4 with its ...

Morel Applause Home Theater Speaker System
Introduction Israel-based Morel offers a wide range of truly unique speakers for stereo and surround operation. Each system is built from a combination of common magnetically-shielded modules. The company offers several subwoofers, powered and otherwise, and three styles of compact satellite speakers, with either separate or coaxial LF and HF drivers. These can be mounted on a horizontal or vertical surface or on special monopole stands. At a recommended U.S. retail price of $2,399, the Applause system is at the top of the Morel line, with the similarly-priced Supra. It includes four identical SoundSpot SA-2 satellites, with separate tweeter and 100-millimeter diameter low/mid-driver in spherical mild steel enclosures. Each satellite weighs a little over 2.5 pounds. These feature a novel "external voice coil," or EVC design, which uses a magnet with a shaped pole piece that fits inside the aluminum voice coil rather than around it, allowing for a beefier coil and apparently a smaller driver for ...
