Definitive Technology SuperCube I Subwoofer
Introduction Several design philosophies differentiate today’s better subwoofers from one another, yet they share a very common attribute: they are designed to shake the fillings from your teeth. A high-performing subwoofer can supply the necessary energy to make the common onscreen outbreak at a local dinosaur park feel as if T-Rex has unmistakably made his way to your home. Subwoofers can range in size from monstrosities that resemble your refrigerator to products only slightly larger than a soccer ball. The SuperCube I is the most recent subwoofer offering from Definitive Technology. The SuperCube I is an ultra-compact powered cube that measures just a hair over 14 inches in any direction and is driven by a mighty 1,500-watt amplifier. Although small in stature, the SuperCube I weighs a dense 60 lbs. and has a retail price of $1,200. From a distance, the SuperCube I looks like many cube-style subwoofers. However, close examination reveals a couple of touches that ...

Klipsch Reference Series 5.1 Theater Speaker System
Introduction Specialty audio/video manufacturers come and go, leaving a rare few who last long enough to see their tenth birthday. Loudspeaker manufacturer Klipsch has survived more than five decades. They have done so with products designed and manufactured with an unwavering design philosophy - reproducing the live event. Klipsch provided me with a review package consisting of their largest components in the Reference line: the RF-7 floor-standing speakers at $2,200 per pair, the RC-7 center speaker at $800, the RSW-15 powered subwoofer costing $1,800, and the RS-7 wall-mounted surround speakers at $900 per pair. The center channel, front main loudspeakers are video-shielded and are available in three handcrafted furniture-grade veneers: jet ash, medium cherry or blond maple. The surrounds speakers are only available with black or white vinyl finishes. The RSW-15 powered subwoofer measures 19.25 inches tall, 18.5 inches wide, 24.5 inches deep and weighs 85 pounds. Its bass reflex design uses a rear-firing 15-inch Cerametallic (specially treated anodized ...

Piega 5.1 Speaker System
Introduction Piega is a loudspeaker manufacturer based in Switzerland, already well known to European audiophiles and definitely a striking-looking relative newcomer (5+ years) to the crowded U.S loudspeaker market. Piega has developed their most loyal following with a line of high-end speakers that incorporate unique ribbon tweeters designed and manufactured by Piega, along with traditional dynamic drivers. The Piega speakers are slender and modern in appearance, with a very refined sound. The speaker package I reviewed featured two affordable pairs of Piega S4 floor-standing loudspeakers ($1,795 per pair), a S4C ($795) center channel speaker, and their pricier P Sub 1 subwoofer ($3,095). The S4s are part of Piega’s less expensive “S” line of speakers, a design that utilizes conventional electromagnetic drivers. Piega’s unique ribbon tweeters are only available in their more expensive “P” line of products. The Piega speakers are very handsome and relatively small in size compared to other speakers in their price range (Energy, B&W, Sonus ...

Sunfire True Subwoofer Super Junior Subwoofer
Introduction The Sunfire True Subwoofer Super Junior priced at $995 is an astonishing achievement. The latest in Bob Carver’s stunning line of audio components – in particular a line of powerful subs – the Super Junior is a step up from the earlier Junior, previously reviewed extremely favorably in Audio Revolution. And a remarkable successor it is, too. Weighing in at 29 pounds, and taking the form of a nine-inch cube, the Super Junior is incredibly small for what it aims to do, which is to move a great deal of air. It manages this with the use of two long-excursion drivers on opposite sides of a cube, one active and the other presumably passive, driven by an amplifier capable of an exceptional 1500 watts RMS (for short periods, thanks to Bob Carver’s Tracking Downconverter amplifer technology) into the driver’s 4.6 ohm impedance. The diaphragms (they are not really cones as such) are thus able ...

Paradigm Focus / CC270 / ADP170 Speakers
Introduction Paradigm is known for building great-sounding speakers that entry-level music and home theater enthusiasts can actually afford and can definitely enjoy. Unlike most loudspeaker manufacturers, Paradigm actually makes, designs and tests their speakers without significant help from outside agencies. They have the largest anechoic chamber in North America at their testing facilities, along with enough engineers to start a "Star Trek" convention. Paradigm designs and makes their own drivers, cabinets, hardware and more. With this level of control over the design and manufacturing process, they are able to hold a top position in the highly competitive world of under $2,000 loudspeakers. The Focus v.3 is the latest addition to Paradigm’s Performance Series, priced at $299. The newest Focus is a two-way, bookshelf or stand-mounted speaker, featuring a rear-firing port. The Focus has a 6.5-inch cone mid-woofer and a one-inch dome tweeter driver complement. The Focus’ mid-woofer utilizes an all-new metallescent, polymer cone material. The cone is ...
