Wilson Audio WATT Puppy Version 7 Loudspeakers
Introduction Wilson claims that their WATT Puppy loudspeaker system is now the best selling $10,000 plus speaker in audio history. Having sold dozens of pairs myself while working at Christopher Hansen Ltd. in Beverly Hills nearly a decade ago, I wouldn’t argue with Wilson’s claim. At around $22,000, David Wilson’s location monitor has developed into a far more refined loudspeaker system. In adapting to the modern, multi-channel home theater market, WATT Puppies can also be matched with Wilson subwoofers as well as rear and center speakers. To say this transducer has come a long way from the strange little (but very heavy) speakers Dave used to drag along as part of his recording rig is a major understatement. There are a number of changes to the WATT Puppy for Version 7 from Version 6. One of the most significant changes to the speaker is the use of an even more “dead” material, which Wilson ...

Jean Marie Reynaud Evolution 3 Loudspeakers
Introduction Recently, while perusing new and different speaker products, our editor at Audiorevolution came across a French speaker brand called Jean Marie Reynaud that piqued my interest. Due to logistics, our best opportunity to review this product was at a local audio/video retailer, Evolution Audio in Agoura Hills, California. Jean Marie Reynaud had been around since 1967 and is one of France’s most respected specialty audio manufactures. The $3,890 Evolution 3 speakers from Jean Marie Reynaud immediately caught my attention when I walked into the room at Evolution where they were on display. The speakers filled the room with a solid, soulful soundstage. The speakers themselves are somewhat diminutive floor-standing speakers, with beech-veneered cabinets that stand 42 inches high, eight inches wide and 12 inches deep. One of the first things I noticed visually was that the tweeters were situated in their own bullet-shaped enclosures on top of the rectangular cabinet box, reminiscent of the B&W ...

Polk Audio LSi Series Speaker System
Introduction Polk Audio is a trusted name in home and car loudspeakers, offering high quality transducers at very fair prices for decades. Founded in 1972 by two audiophiles, Matthew Polk and George Klopfer, Polk Audio has grown to become one of the world’s most successful brands of high-quality home loudspeakers. Polk Audio prides itself in having employees that truly love music and care about good sound rather than people that just “sell boxes.” The LSi Series loudspeakers are Polk’s most recommended line of speakers for “serious listeners.” The LSi home theater speaker system evaluated here includes the LSi15s at $1,740 per pair, used as the main loudspeakers, a LSiC center channel speaker at $580, and a pair of LSiFX surround speakers costing $1,060 per pair. The LSi15s are tall and sleek works of art. They stand eight-and-five-eighths inches wide by 45.5 inches high by 13 inches deep. Tipping the scales at 66 pounds each, these are ...

Velodyne Digital Drive Series DD-12 Subwoofer
Introduction The advent of home theater systems and, to some extent, the increased popularity of small monitor loudspeakers has resulted in a boom in manufacturers offering wide varieties of subwoofers. Until recently, only a relative handful of manufacturers produced true subwoofers, and even fewer offered truly high quality. Velodyne has been a constant force in this arena, continually producing some of the most revered subwoofers on the market at any given time. Their recent HGS series of relatively diminutive subwoofers is no exception, generally considered among the cream of the crop despite fierce competition. The HGS series offered high output SPL capability as well as exceptionally low distortion, especially when compared to most of its competitors. So it was a challenge for Velodyne to achieve a substantial step up in performance from this series. The challenge was answered by the new Digital Drive series, offering lower distortion via their trademark servo control, and increased volume capability, ...

Canton Ergo 5.0 Speaker System
Introduction While it’s a fairly new name to the North American market, Canton has been producing high-end speakers in Germany since 1972, reportedly capturing an impressive 25 percent of the German market with its wide variety of speaker offerings. This review features the Canton Ergo RC-A’s at $5,000 per pair used as front main loudspeakers, Ergo CM502 center channel speaker at $800, and the Ergo 302s at $1,400 per pair for rear surrounds. The Ergo line being reviewed is more traditional then Canton’s more contemporary Karat line and is a step up from the LE and Movie series loudspeakers. Both lines share many of theme drivers and other components and the build quality is the same. I was asked by Canton to review this system without a separate subwoofer, using the powered woofers in the RC-A towers to handle the low end. Canton is a fairly large speaker company, with considerable research and development resources. ...
