In Appreciation of the Harbeth Compact 7 ES-3
The Harbeth Compact 7ES-3 stand mounted loudspeakers have the distinction of being in residence in this reviewer's system for seven consecutive years. The speakers, in a distinguished cherry finish, are not only an excellent reviewer’s tool, but a music lover’s dream. These British boxes have been reviewed numerous times in print, and online. The speaker has in been the Harbeth line in previous iterations for a number of years, but the ES-3 really brought something special to the table.Out of the box, there is something magical about these unassuming classic-looking British monitors. Good stands get the best out of them, and my listening room they sit on custom ordered Sound Anchor stands. The stands, without question, are worth the extra expense. Good speaker cables are offer another payoff. I have have in rotation, depending on amplifier, Transparent, QED (as recommended ...

Thiel TM3 Loudspeaker Review
I’ve been a fan of Thiel loudspeakers going on almost a decade now. I reviewed multiple products from the legendary company. Their flagship, at the time, CS3.7 floorstander was one of the finest speakers I have had in my listening room, bar none. I also evaluated, and later purchased, the CS2.4 floorstander, which still resides in my system today. Thiel as a company has undergone some dramatic changes, including the untimely passing of chief designer and founder Jim Thiel, a change of ownership, and a revamping of the product line. The company smartly hired distinguished industry veteran, Mark Mason, as lead designer, and now currently employs a four-man engineering team. The Thiel brain trust has decided to offer up set of fresh designs that build on the Thiel legacy, but depart a bit from Jim Thiel’s time and phase ...

Fluance XL7F Loudspeakers Review
Fluance is a speaker manufacturer based in Ontario, Canada. They have been around since 1999, but, I admit, they were a new name to me when I received an email from their very diligent PR person asking if I was interested in reviewing one of their products. One look at the product line, and the amazingly modest pricing, led me to immediately reply in the affirmative. Fluance designs and distributes a full suite of home theater and two channel speakers. They sell complete 5.1 systems, floorstanders, standmounts, surround speakers, and subwoofers. There are several lines to choose from, including the AV, SX, and XL Series, each with specific characteristics and cosmetics. I am reviewing a pair of the XL7F floorstanders, which sell for an amazing $499. Fluance sells direct from their website as well as through select retailers. Before we get ...

Bryston Mini A Loudspeaker Review
Bryston Ltd, the long-standing Canadian firm, is one of the audio companies I respect most. Their products are produced from a true engineering standpoint, with real world pricing, and backed with standard-setting service and amazingly long warranties. I have reviewed a good number of Bryston products. The BCD-1 CD player, the BDA-1 DAC (still my current reference), and the superb BDP-1 digital player are among my favorites. The company has gone on to introduce a number of new products over the past year so, including upgrades the to the BDA and BDP series, a headphone amp, a USB to SPDIF converter, a high end disc transport, and even DSD capability. Most surprising, the company has added loudspeakers to its product portfolio. The comprehensive line includes floorstanders, stand-mount monitors, subwoofers, in-wall speakers, and home theater specific products. Bryston obviously has the challenge ...

The Denon HEOS system is a scalable, expandable, and affordable distributed audio system for just about every conceivable domestic set up.The HEOS line up is comprehensive, with three speakers, an amplifier, a link, and an optional Wi-Fi extender. The three speakers vary in shape and size. The $599 HEOS 7 is the largest speaker, with two tweeters, two midrange drivers, and one bass driver powered by five Class D amplifiers. Two passive radiators to supplement bass. The $399 HEOS 5 has two tweeters, two midrange ...
