The Basics:
Hitachi produces both plasma and LCD flat panels. The company reserves its bigger screen sizes for the plasma arena, so this 47-inch, 1080p model is the largest in the LCD lineup. The TV has a 1920 x 1080 resolution and uses a Super In-Plane Switching (S-IPS) panel to improve its motion and viewing angle; however, it does not offer 120Hz technology.
The connection panel sports three HDMI inputs (including one on the side panel) that accept 1080p/60 but not 1080p/24. You also get two HD-capable component video inputs, plus an RS-232 port to integrate the TV into a more advanced control system. The side-panel SD card reader allows you to view JPEG photos on the 47-inch screen.

Sony’s XBR4 and XBR5 lines represent the company’s top-of-the-line 2007 LCDs; the two lines are distinguished by aesthetic differences but offer similar features and performance. The XBR5 Series is the more expensive of the two, sporting a high-gloss piano-black frame surrounded by a clear acrylic border. The KDL-52XBR5 is a 52-inch, 1080p model.
The TV’s generous input panel includes three HDMI inputs that accept 1080p/60 and 1080p/24 and two component video inputs that accept 1080p. The XBR5 also adds an RS-232 control port to the back panel, in order to integrate the TV into an advanced control system. The KDL-52XBR5 has a lot of aspect ratio options, including a zero-overscan mode.

Sharp’s D64U Series is also dubbed the Slim-line Series, as these LCDs have 25 percent less depth, 20 percent less weight and a thinner bezel surrounding the screen. Screen sizes range from 32 to 65 inches; the LC-52D64U is a 52-inch, 1080p model with a traditional CCFL backlight, gloss-black frame, and a thin silver speaker bar that runs discreetly along the bottom of the unit.
The TV has a healthy connection panel that includes three HDMI 1.3 inputs and two component video inputs, all of which accept 1080p/60 but not 1080p/24. Sharp kindly puts both an HDMI and a component video input on the side panel for easier access when the TV is wall-mounted. An RS-232 port is on board to integrate the TV into an advanced control system, and a USB port is available for software upgrades.

This 47-inch, 1080p model hails from Philips’ high-end 2007 line and includes 120Hz technology, which doubles the TV’s frame rate from 60 to 120Hz to reduce the appearance of judder and render smoother motion. This TV also includes Philips’ Ambilight system, Perfect Pixel HD processing and a USB port through which you can perform firmware updates and play JPEG/MP3 files.
Philips’ Settings Assistant automatically makes adjustments to picture controls by showing you a series of split-screen images; as you select which image you prefer, the TV adjusts the picture parameters accordingly. This TV offers a decent amount of image adjustments, including direct access to white-balance controls, but it lacks an adjustable backlight, offering only a light sensor that automatically adjusts image brightness based on your room’s lighting conditions.

This 52-inch, 1080p model offers many of the features you’ll find in the higher-end 71 Series, with one notable omission: this TV lacks Auto Motion Plus 120Hz technology. The LN-T5265F is a traditional LCD that uses a CCFL backlight, which is adjustable to help you tailor light output and black level to suit your viewing conditions.
