The UN46B8000 is a 46” LED backlit LCD television from Samsung that offers – among other things – edge based LED backlighting, impressive energy efficiency and a slick, slim design.
Samsung’s 46” Series 8 television stands just a bit under 30” tall when set up on the stand, and weighs in at right about 50lbs. The frame is black with a grey Touch of Color. It’s a slim television, with a depth of 1.2”. It’s not the thinnest television out there, but it certainly doesn’t have many competitors.
Thanks to LED edge lighting, the UN46B8000 has a stated dynamic contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1 and provides dark blacks and bright rich colors. LED lighting is also responsible for energy use much lower than that of standard LCD televisions and a cooler running unit overall.

Sony’s XEL-1, the first OLED on the market, certainly stands out as a unique option for high definition viewing. While the 11” screen does limit the utility of the XEL-1 OLED TV, the novelty of having early access to the impressive OLED technology may be enough for some buyers.
The XEL-1 features a 960 x 540 resolution, making it a quarter of the resolution of a 1080p set. Not technically high definition, Sony is quick to point out that the pixel density of the 11” display is the same as that of a 40” 1080p LCD television.

One of Samsungs new LED backlit HDTVS, the UN46B8500 – or the LED 8500 as Samsung calls it – features a slim design and a fairly strong feature set.
The 46” member of Samsung’s 8500 8 Series comes in at just over an inch and a half thick and at right about 41lbs. The TV’s frame is black, but with a hint of grey, a feature Samsung refers to as a “Touch of Color”.
The UN46B8500 features a 1080p resolution and a 7,000,000:1 contrast ratio thanks to local dimming and Samsung’s Mega Contrast technology. While the black isn’t as deep as the still beloved Pioneer Kuro plasmas, the LED 8500 boasts impressive darkness for an LCD screen.

The 52" Bravia XBR10 Edge lit LED High Definition Television is one of the thinnest HDTVs that Sony has produced. Bypassing plasma or LCD technology, the XBR10 series uses edge lit LED backlighting to produce a high contrast image. Sony claims the dynamic contrast rating is 1,000,000:1. Being a sidelit television allows for a skinny design, but the television isn't capable of localized background dimming. The XBR10 does come equipped with a separate media box called the BRAVIA 1080 wireless transmission system. It sends a 1080p audio / video signal to the receiver inside the television and looks like a typical cable box. In other words, there are no cables to connect to the actual television beyond the power cable. The XBR10 also plays 24p content via HDMI and also utilizes 240Hz technology to interpolate three frames for each one. ...
