Share Your Setup - David
Hello, Everyone.  Welcome to this week's installment of Share Your Setup .  We've got a fabulous, dedicated theatre space to share with you, sent in by High-Def Digest reader, David Susilo.  David is an award-winning photographer, self-described technology freak, and fan of anything Canon, DIsney, PSB, and Pioneer.  He's also -- wait for it -- ISF and THX certified, a Control4 professional installer, and a member of HAA, CEA, and CEDIA.  Impressive!  Here's David in his own words to talk about his setup, officialy named the Akung Cinema Experience (which is dedicated to his grandfather, Hadi Soeryanto):  AUDIOPHILE, VIDEO/CINEPHILE, OR BOTH? AND WHY?  I'm more of a musicphile and cinephile.  With my various backgrounds including video and music production, I want my home theatre / music room to be able to faithfully reproduce the audio and video as faithfully as ...

iTunes Moves into the Cloud
After many months of speculation, Steve Jobs announced that iTunes would be finally utilizing cloud storage upon the release of iOS5 in the Fall of 2011.  The new service, aptly called iCloud, stores music, video, books, apps and photos as well as syncs them over all your devices (non-Apple devices included and up to 10).  For instance, if you purchased a new album on your iPhone, it would automatically be synced to your PC & iPad the next time they are connected to the Internet.  The completely free iCloud service replaces MobileMe, a similar concept that Apple attempted to charge a yearly fee of $99.   Apple is also rolling out iTunes Match.  Likely coming from their recent acquisition of LaLa, iTunes Match will take all the songs that you have downloaded from other sources over the years and match them ...

Share Your Setup - Travis
Welcome all to the first ever edition of AVRev's new article series, Share Your Setup, where the AVRev readers are the subject of the articles.  Basically, I thought it'd be fun for us to show off our gear and talk shop in the comments afterwards.  I know I love telling friends and family [Palmer's wife edit: and random strangers] about my home theatre setup -- every gadget, every source, every specification and calibration -- and there's bound to be a few others out there like me. Say hello to Travis Gidcumb, everyone.  Travis is not only our first victim (muhahahahaha!), but he's also an AVRev reader and facebook fan who has been collecting audio and video gear for the last 25 years.  He's rocking a home theatre system with a Pioneer Elite Kuro Plasma wallmounted over his fireplace, a ...

The New Frontier: High End Computer Audio, and USB DACs
What a difference a decade makes. Ten years ago downloading an MP3 file of an average length pop song would hog up tons of bandwidth and test the patience of a saint. Fast forward and today downloading  or streaming uncompressed, feature length films, full CDs, and huge graphic files are as common place as sending emails. Modern Internet bandwidth has created a new culture, one where massive file transfers, real time video, and wireless hot spots are part of daily life. But there have been other developments that have also changed the way we go about managing our media. Data storage has become affordable, and shockingly so. A 1TB USB external hard drive can be found at most electronics stores and e-tailers like Amazon for under a $100, with prices continuing to drop due to fierce competition and innovation. ...
