Netflix Goes Mobile, iPhone 4 Hits the WWDC
Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference kicked off this morning with Steve Jobs keynote.  The highlight of the conference is the impending release of the new iPhone, dubbed the iPhone 4.  Here's a breakdown of the hardware upgrades to this generation of the iPhone:The camera has been upgraded to a 5-Megapixel model with a 5x digital zoom.  It also records HD video at 720p as well (30 fps).  The iPhone 4 comes with a LED flash on the rear camera which can stay on during video recording.  Video can be edited within the new iMovie application as well ($4.99).  Apple also stressed that their "backside illuminated sensor" would improve picture quality rather then increasing Megapixels on the rear camera. The iPhone 4 also comes with a front facing camera for self-portraits or the "FaceTime" video chat tool.  Facetime is only compatible over Wi-Fi ...

Google TV versus Apple TV: Who Will Dominate the Home Theater?
We are on the cusp of Apple’s WWDC conference on June 7th where they will be announcing the much talked about iPhone 4 and a new line of iPod Touches, possibly with built-in cameras.  What hasn’t leaked out is the direction that Apple will be talking their Apple TV line.  By comparison to the iPod / iPhone / iPad, Apple TV (our review) hasn’t seen the breakout and rampant success of those products.  In many ways, the Apple TV works as a complimentary component if you already invested in other Apple products.  For instance, you can treat it as a music server and select play lists via an iPhone / iPod Touch with the Remote app.  Interestingly, Apple TV has never interacted with the App store, a fact that may change on Monday.  Apple TV is also a closed system, ...

Tweak-o-Files: Volume 3
Rockler Benchcookies:Just by accident, I found out about Bench Cookies (patent pending) sold by Rockler, the wood working chain store. The Bench Cookies are used to stabilize a piece of wood or any item on a work area while you sand, saw, or nail. In that regard it works perfectly. If you place an object on the Cookies, and try to move it, it will not budge. They are sold in a set of four. They look amazingly like high end resonance control devices. I decided to buy two sets and use them under components in a "what the hell" moment. First, I removed my Symposium Rollerblocks and placed one Bench Cookie near each of the four feet of my preamp.  I was impressed. The sound was smooth, detailed, and imaging was excellent. The other big benefit is that your ...

Like vampire novels or a seasonal sandwich at your local deli, harking to the famed Nietzsche/Peter Pan/Battlestar Galactica quote “all of this has happened before, and will happen again”, 3D technology seems to crawl back into the pop culture spotlight once every ten or so years.  And why not? It’s fun to go to the movie theater, strap on the glasses, and watch as a barrage of things fly in your direction.  The entire concept behind three-dimensional usage swings on the immersion experienced by the people planted in those seats, something that has, naturally, improved as technology has improved – with the likes of IMAX 3D consistently cutting the tech’s teeth through somewhat under-the-radar exhibitions.  However, a few pieces have been put in motion that threaten to bring the technology much more into the mainstream, such as a few rather ...
