Marantz SR 6004 A/V Receiver Review
Marantz has long been associated with stereo receivers and has produced an extensive line of components over the last 40 years. Times have certainly changed from when all-one-receivers were at the heart of many a 2-channel stereo system and were called upon to serve as amp, tuner and phono stage. Nowadays, a receiver can hardly get a second look unless it can serve up the video goods, too. Marantz's SR 6004 is part of the new breed of A/V receivers designed to accommodate practically any audio/video connection and demand imaginable. With a suggested sticker of $1,249.99, the SR 6004 proves the old adage, “you get what you pay for.” And it's quite a lot.FeaturesIt would be a short review if I focused on what the SR 6004 can't do, as its list of features is nearly inexhaustible. One could spend ...

Integra DTR-9.9 A/V Receiver Preview
Integra’s 7.1 channel, THX Ultra 2 Plus certified DTR-9.9 receiver is incredibly complete in its feature set.  Receiving a great deal of positive coverage, reviews often stated that the biggest downside to the DTR-9.9 was that it offered too much, making setup and operation a bit complex. Though the 9.9 offers 7.1 channels of surround sound, Integra takes into account the possibility that owners may have a 5.1 speaker setup, and so allows the front speakers to be biamped by the two spare channels.  The DTR-9.9 has a 145 watt output per channel at 8 Ohms, and is certified for performance at 4.  It features a frequency response from 5Hz up to 110KHz and a signal to noise ratio of 110dB.  Crossover frequency can be set anywhere from 40Hz to 200Hz and is able to be adjusted by channel pairing, meaning ...

Pioneer Elite SC-27 A/V Receiver Review
Sometimes “good” isn't good enough. If it was, a certain A/V receiver would have been on many a home theater enthusiast's wish list for Christmas 2008. Instead of rushing to market with a product that just passed muster, Pioneer took a step back and worked on making a better component, one to spearhead its Elite A/V receiver lineup. The resulting Elite SC-27 was born after several years in development. Pioneer's marketing manager Dave Bales described it as a receiver designed by committee, with input from THX and certification from Air Studios in London. Good wasn't good enough, though, for the SC-27 - even after receiving certification from THX, Pioneer spent another year bettering the amp before introducing it to the market. When I spoke with Bales, he was clearly enthused and proud of the SC-27, and believes this second-generation ICE ...

Onkyo TX-NR5007 AV Receiver Preview
The TX-NR5007 is the flagship model in Onkyo’s current receiver line, also known as the “Double-0” series.  The features 9.2 channel output allows for customizability in home theater setups.  While a 9.2 speaker setup is possible, it’s more likely than not that user will have a 5.1 or 7.1 setup, in which case the extra channels can be assigned to double up on existing channels, giving more power to the main speakers. The Onkyo 007 handles every high definition audio format currently in use, including Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, and DTS-HD High Resolution audio.  The NR5007 features a great deal of options for audio optimization, among them being THX Loudness Plus, MultEQXT and Dynamic Volume from Audyssey and is the first Onkyo receiver to offer Dolby Volume. Three TI Aureus DSP chips are employed to handle audio processing in the THX ...

Pioneer SC-09TX AV Receiver Preview
The SC-09TX from Pioneer is the flagship A/V receiver in the Pioneer Elite line.   It sports a unique look and is the only Pioneer receiver that currently features a front LCD display.  Pioneer’s SC-09TX “Susano” receiver offers a robust feature set for both video and audio enthusiasts.Pushed as the top of the Pioneer Elite receivers, the SC-09TX includes Qdeo video processing for all six of its HDMI inputs.  The receiver also has five component inputs, four for S-video, and eight for composite.  Video processing features include HDMI x.v. Color, a component video converter, and support for videos straight from an iPod.  Curiously, HDMI signals receive no video processing, and pass through unaltered. The Pioneer SC-09TX is a 10 channel receiver and is able to be set in a variety of configurations, including standard 5.1 and 7.1 setups.  Each channel boasts a ...
