playGo USB Review
“Computer audio” is the current favorite buzz phrase in high end audio. Ironically, non audiophiles are probably not too familiar with the term since playing music files from a computer, internet radio, or some form of a streaming service are daily activities. Since most listeners are not audiophiles, convenience and easy access to music are far more important than quaint notions of high fidelity sound. But nowhere is it written that you can’t have the best of both worlds; great sound and convenience. Forget complicated set ups with USB DAC’s, expensive playback software and esoteric computer tweaks. Many just want to hit “play” and hear files stored on their hard drives without jumping through hoops, but with high fidelity sound. Some high end audio companies have heard the call, offering wireless streaming built into audiophile components. There have even been cheaper ...

DH Labs Digital Cables Review
DH Labs, out of Alachua, Florida, has been in the cable business for a number of years, slowly and steadily building a base of very loyal customers and dealers. They also have a catalog of great reviews that seem to have a common theme, which is attractive, great sounding cables, offered at very fair prices. I evaluated the silver Revelation interconnect in part 2 of my silver cable overview here. It has since become part of my reference system after I purchased a 1 meter pair.  I found the clarity, resolution, and overall coherence of the Revelation very impressive.DH Labs also makes very impressive power cords and speaker cables, including the Q-10 Signature, which has been in production for over ten years. They have also recently added HDMI cables, and there are plans for a state of the art USB ...

Bryston BDA-1 DAC Review
The Canadian company Bryston is one of the mainstays of pro and high end audio. I have previously reviewed their entry level power amp and preamp combo and their excellent BCD-1 CD player. Bryston gear is known as being exceptionally well built, clean sounding, and reliable. The company, with the BCD-1, made their first foray into digital, and several years ago, introduced the much raved about BDA-1 DAC. I have been itching to get a review sample fo the BDA-1 for some time now. Micah Sheveloff, Bryston’s long time PR rep was kind enough to send one my way. The timing was perfect, as I had several digital sources on hand to evaluate, and I just ordered several brand new digital cables. Recently I have done several “budget” DAC reviews, that is, those costing less than $1000. I found both ...

IOGEAR Wireless HD Computer to TV Kit and USB 2.0 External HD Audio / Video Adapter Review
I’ve often wanted an easy, direct way to share photos and videos from my computer especially when I have company over.  I prefer to comfortably recline in my chair while narrating vacation photos and videos instead of having a bunch of people crowding around my computer screen and creating a claustrophobic environment.Rather than invest in a traditional projector setup, hassle with wires and worry about the video and sound quality, IOGEAR now offers a solution that allows me to use my 55” LCD HDTV as a second computer screen. I can also hook it up to my AV receiver via HDMI input and have surround sound along with the HD video. My computer is instantly transformed into a multimedia player that’s able to play more media formats than any player out there, especially since I can find and download any ...

Danish Audio Design DAC 05 and DAC 10 Review
My off-an-on trek through the world of Scandinavian audio components brought me most recently to Aalborg, Denmark, and Danish Audio Design. The company, led by music lover and designer Ole Nielsen, is a bit unusual in that it focuses primarily on producing Digital-to-Analog converters. As more music lovers discover the benefits of pairing a digital player with an external DAC – improved sound quality, most importantly – the market for Digital-to-Analog converters has certainly broadened and expanded. Danish Audio offers three DACs: the entry-level DAC 05, bigger brother DAC 10 and flagship model, the DAC 20. Nielsen sent the DAC 05 and DAC 10 for audition. The DAC 05 retails for approximately $1,715, while the DAC 10 sells for around $3,180. DesignThe DAC 05 and DAC 10 (along with the DAC 20) are handmade and built according to Nielsen’s blueprints using ...
