During Season Five, “Highlander: The Series” was at the peak of its
creative glory. True, it is a slightly abbreviated season – 18 episodes
rather than the usual 22 – but some of these hours achieve a sense of
epic in both look and feel that is unusual on episodic television. In
those 18 hours, there is only one episode that can be labeled a clunker
– at least three are exceptional by just about any standards.

In “Combat/ Season 1: Campaign 1,” the trials and tribulations of World
War II arrived in the living rooms of American viewers in October 1962,
17 years after the end of that international engagement. For the next
five years, “Combat!” continued recounting stories of the European
theater, showcasing the men of King Company. Ironically, the first
episode was set in 1944, with the Normandy Invasion, making the last
year of the war last five years in real time, later echoed by
“M.A.S.H.,” another television series’ that had the anomaly of a
broadcast run that lasted twice the length of its subject, the Korean
War.

On
an episode of “Saturday Night Live’s” faux news program Weekend Update,
anchorman Jimmy Fallon joked that in an attempt to bolster their
morning show’s sagging ratings, CBS was changing the show’s name to
“C.S.I. the Early Show.” This joke came not long after CBS announced
that they were doing a spin-off of the most popular show on television,
the original “C.S.I.” For the few of you who have been living in a cave
for the last five years, “C.S.I. (Crime Scene Investigation)” is an
hour-long drama about forensic scientists working in Sin City, Las
Vegas, Nevada.

As the first season of “South Park” came to a close with a thrilling
cliffhanger, leaving millions of fans wondering who Eric Cartman’s real
father was, the pressure was really on for creators Trey Parker and
Matt Stone to prove that they were not just one-hit wonders. In a move
of twisted comedic genius, the first episode of the second season of
“South Park” threw viewers for such a curve ball that it had those who
thought they loved the show furious, baffled and in shock. Many months
had passed since Season One ended. The first season’s shows had been
repeated ad nauseam on Comedy Central and it was finally time to learn
who impregnated Cartman’s mom at the Drunken Barn Dance ...

I was such a big “Simpsons” fan that for probably the first six years
of the show, I would go out of my way to religiously record and archive
the episodes on tape. This was long before the days of TiVo and for
much of this time, the show was not syndicated, so I had to be sure
that every Sunday night at 8 PM, my VCR was set to Fox to record what I
felt was the best written, funniest show on television. Eventually,
school and work got in the way of my quest to record and archive every
single “Simpsons” episode and as the popularity of TV shows on DVD
began to increase, I knew that eventually every ...
