‘The Replacements’ teeters between being fitfully diverting and
annoying during its running time. In hindsight after an initial
theatrical viewing, its transitory pleasures recede, leaving a bad
taste behind; watching it on DVD a second time makes its irritants more
pronounced.

Back in the 1930s, some wiseacre declared that the basic movie story
was "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl," and of course,
that really is the boiled-down plot of a lot of movies, including "Love
& Basketball." In fact, the sheer familiarity of this undeveloped
boy-meets-girl idea is comforting; it's the stuff of all romantic
melodramas and comedies. We don't want to see boy NOT get girl, after
all. It's the details that flesh out the idea that make the movies
matter to us.

All too often, this movie is so loud, noisy and chaotic that it's like
having your head in a washing machine full of marbles. It's dizzying,
deafening, frenetic, and you don't know why you're there. The rest of
the time, "Any Given Sunday" sometimes gets by on sheer nerve, bravura
acting and velocity. It's far from Oliver Stone's best movie, but much
better than "U-Turn" or "Nixon," and he's giving it his flashy, trashy
all.
He has a huge and
busy cast, the football scenes are staged with flair and energy, the
score is imaginative, and lord knows it's earnest. But for those not
deeply into football, at almost 160 minutes it's also exhausting. Even
for those who ...

Barry W. Blaustein is a successful screenwriter, though the quality of
his output varies, from "Coming to America" down to "Boomerang," and
from "The Nutty Professor" (1996) down to "Nutty Professor II: The
Klumps." But ever since childhood, he's been a big fan of professional
wrestling, and with this heart-felt and entertaining documentary, he
tried to get behind the wrestling scene, or, as the title says, "Beyond
the Mat." While it's very unlikely that this film will convert anyone
into a fan of pro wrestling, several of the wrestlers come vividly to
life as real people, for better and for worse.
The movie was given scant theatrical release, probably ...

Question: doesn't putting out a full-frame DVD for a film that was
originally shot with a widescreen aspect ratio defeat half the purpose
of having the movie on DVD in the first place? If you can get past this
and you like animals, 'Air Bud' turns out to be a perfectly decent
boy-and-his-dog movie. It's sweet and even borderline plausible, a lot
closer to an updated version of 'Lassie' than its far-fetched premise
might suggest.
Buddy is a golden retriever, who escapes from a cruel owner and finds
refuge with young Josh, whose mom has just moved the family to a new
town following the death of Josh's dad. Buddy turns out to have a
talent for playing basketball, which is ...
