The mixture of Loreena McKennitt’s sprightly, pseudo-medieval ‘Mummer’s Dance’ -- not heard on the actual soundtrack -- and the sumptuous imagery have the visceral effect of an authoritative voice uttering the words "Once upon a time."

I admit this openly and without shame. It may simply be because I will never forgive him for making my ears bleed with his attempts at an Irish accent in "Far and Away." But I love "Jerry Maguire" despite Cruise, and I give all the credit to writer/director Cameron Crowe for making me give a damn about Jerry Maguire, a sports agent who grows a conscience overnight, and then spends an entire movie figuring out what he's supposed to do with his newly-discovered humanity.

True, the older film doesn’t pack the surprising punch of "Moulin Rouge," but it’s kind of hard for one of the world’s most famous texts to sneak up on anybody at this point. It’s to Luhrmann’s credit that his wild energy and colorful inventiveness is so robustly on view here; we may know where the story’s going, but it’s a fairly dazzling version all the same.

The result is charming whimsy for those who can surrender themselves to "Chocolat," with the risk of ennui for those who are resistant.

title: The Family Man (DTS) function popUp(URL,NAME) { amznwin=window.open(URL,NAME,'location=yes,scrollbars=yes,status=yes,toolbar=yes,resizable=yes,width=380,height=450,screenX=10,screenY=10,top=10,left=10'); amznwin.focus();} document.open(); document.write(""); document.close(); studio: Universal Home Video MPAA rating: PG-13 starring: Nicolas Cage, Téa Leoni, Makenzie Vega, Jeremy Piven, Saul Rubinek, Josef Sommer, Don Cheadle, Harve Presnell, Mary Beth Hurt release year: 2000 film rating: Four stars reviewed by: Bill Warren Of all the movies that have tried to repeat some of the impact of Frank Capra's classic 'It's a Wonderful Life,' 'The Family Man' probably comes the closest to that impossible stunt. It's a bit overstated and it goes on too long; little is left to our imaginations, and there are few, if any, real emotional highlights. But it's an honest piece of work all the way around -- and in some ways, this is the most remarkable aspect of the movie.
