was the first for many landmarks: the first PG-rated movie released by
Disney studios, the first release under their Touchstone label, Tom
Hanks’ first starring movie role, and Ron Howard’s first big-studio
film as director. Howard had directed a Roger Corman low-budgeter and a
couple of TV movies; Hanks had appeared in a TV movie and a
little-known slasher/horror movie, He Knows You’re Alone. Daryl Hannah
had made a few more movies, including a memorable appearance in Blade
Runner.

‘Singles’ is a witty, amiable romantic comedy that follows
misadventures of the heart among a group of twenty-something Seattle
residents.
Ad exec Linda (Kyra Sedgwick), reeling from a breakup, warily becomes
involved with Steve (Campbell Scott), a Department of Transportation
employee who is passionate on the subject of gridlock. Bright waitress
Janet (Bridget Fonda) is mad about boneheaded, untalented grunge rocker
Chris (Matt Dillon). And tense poseur Debbie (Sheila Kelley) signs up
with a video dating service in the hopes of finding Mr. Right.

Let us begin here with a note about film critics. Our profession
dictates that we have fairly extensive vocabularies; we should not have
to resort to name-calling. However, sometimes only a word like "lame"
will do.

Sandra Bullock is so thoroughly associated with romantic comedies these
days that it's a little startling to remember that she came to mass
public attention only four years ago opposite Keanu Reeves in 'Speed.'
'Speed' was a terrific movie and Bullock was great in it, but it's not
exactly the genre she's become best known for. 'While You Were
Sleeping,' released the following year, can be credited for
perma-gluing Bullock to the concept of cheery love stories.

'Sleepless in Seattle' is a romantic comedy of surpassing slickness.
'Sleepless' director/co-writer Nora Ephron and stars Tom Hanks and Meg
Ryan all recently worked together again on the 1998 hit 'You've Got
Mail.' Even if you enjoyed 'You've Got Mail' (I did), that's no
guarantee you'll have fond feelings for the earlier collaboration.
