How many romantic comedies do you think are out there? Probably too many. So what makes “The Proposal” different from all the others? Well, in all honesty, not much. Still, “The Proposal” is more entertaining than I would have expected. I enjoyed the chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, but the film suffers from too many of the pitfalls of romantic comedies.
“The Proposal” ultimate downfall is that the ending is unresolved, at least for my tastes. The ending is the same as every romantic comedy. It ends with the audience wanting to know what transpires next. We already knew from the beginning that they are going to end up together, but what happens to their jobs and lives after that. That, to me is more interesting than the journey to how they end up together.
The promos for the DVD ...

This warm, sensitive and funny movie didn’t burn up the boxoffice,
though it deserved to; this may explain why the DVD has so few extras.
Technically, the DVD is fine, with the careful color palette of
director Anand Tucker, cinematographer Peter Suschitzky and production
designer William Arnold well-rendered. The color scheme is discussed in
the expert “making of” documentary on the disc, and in Tucker’s
intelligent, interesting commentary track.

“Wedding
Crashers” is a straightforward comedy starring Owen Wilson and Vince
Vaughn in which the two play business partners who also find joy in
their favorite time of year, wedding season. They stake out and crash
weddings of every type, size and ethnic group. Equipped with their
“rules,” they not only get free food and drink and become the life of
the party, they also end up each taking a different woman to bed every
time, which ultimately is the goal of the wedding crashers.

When “Pretty Woman” was released 15 years ago, it instantly turned
Julia Roberts from a promising newcomer to a full-fledged movie
star—and she gives a full-fledged movie star performance here. It’s one
of her funniest and most beguiling roles, lit up like a rocket by her
incandescent, ten-million-dollar smile. It’s also a remarkably good
performance; she’s usually at her best in romantic comedies like this,
“My Best Friend’s Wedding,” “Notting Hill” and the like. Her best work,
in “Erin Brockovich,” doesn’t fit the mold, but then Roberts herself,
like all true movie stars, doesn’t fit any mold: she made the mold.

When “Unfaithfully Yours” was first released in 1948, it was such a
monumental flop (and so expensive) that it put a lot of nails in the
coffin of the career of writer-director-producer Preston Sturges. He
only made one more American movie and a minor film in France some years
later.
