Often imitated but never bettered, 1978’s ‘National Lampoon’s Animal
House’ is not only one of the most successful film comedies ever made
but also one of the most influential. Pretty much every rowdy teen
comedy made since has attempted to either copy outright or somehow
improve upon ‘Animal’s mixture of outrageous pranks, irreverence,
anarchic high spirits and palpable camaraderie.

Public faith in the President of the United States being what it has
been for the past few decades, depicting the Chief Executive as an
unambiguous hero might seem like a questionable stroke, but when he's
played by Harrison Ford, heck, anybody would vote for him. Cast as a
classic good guy, Ford is such an unimpeachable icon of action
rectitude and empathy--able to fight like a master soldier and hang on
in situations that would kill lesser men, yet still sweat and show fear
like the rest of us--that we cheer for him as he brings new meaning to
the notion of hands-on crisis.
'Air Force One,' should you somehow have missed last summer's press
blitz, is a taut adrenaline-pumper in ...

Question: doesn't putting out a full-frame DVD for a film that was
originally shot with a widescreen aspect ratio defeat half the purpose
of having the movie on DVD in the first place? If you can get past this
and you like animals, 'Air Bud' turns out to be a perfectly decent
boy-and-his-dog movie. It's sweet and even borderline plausible, a lot
closer to an updated version of 'Lassie' than its far-fetched premise
might suggest.
Buddy is a golden retriever, who escapes from a cruel owner and finds
refuge with young Josh, whose mom has just moved the family to a new
town following the death of Josh's dad. Buddy turns out to have a
talent for playing basketball, which is ...

Forward up to just about any chapter heading on 'Sling Blade' and
chances are you'll find a scene that works as its own stand-alone story
as well as it fits into the film as a whole. Director/writer/star Billy
Bob Thornton won the 1996 Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay
(from his own stage play) and it's not hard to see why. Thornton is a
filmmaker who knows how to create suspense and characterization without
raising his voice.

Hollywood Pictures Home Video
MPAA rating:
PG
starring:
Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullman, Peter Gallagher, Peter Boyle
release year:
1995
reviewed by:

Sandra Bullock is so thoroughly associated with romantic comedies these
days that it's a little startling to remember that she came to mass
public attention only four years ago opposite Keanu Reeves in 'Speed.'
'Speed' was a terrific movie and Bullock was great in it, but it's not
exactly the genre she's become best known for. 'While You Were
Sleeping,' released the following year, can be credited for
perma-gluing Bullock to the concept of cheery love stories.
