At this point in history, reviewing anything involving the Rolling
Stones is not unlike reviewing Stonehenge. Both have been around nearly
forever, and those who revere, are puzzled by or ignore the monoliths
are unlikely to have their strongly held opinions altered by anything
written at this late date.

Let us begin here with a note about film critics. Our profession
dictates that we have fairly extensive vocabularies; we should not have
to resort to name-calling. However, sometimes only a word like "lame"
will do.

'Stand and Deliver' has always seemed rather like a very smart,
well-made TV movie, an impression that is greatly enhanced when it is
viewed on the small screen. A fact-based story of academic achievement
in the face of enormous odds, 'Stand and Deliver' is often quite
entertaining, no mean feat for a story that is in the broad strokes
David vs. Goliath but is specifically about high school math class.

Director John Landis is responsible for revitalizing the teen college
comedy with 'Animal House,' reinventing the whole concept of
comedy/horror in 'American Werewolf in London' and being among the
first filmmakers to showcase the work of makeup effects hero Rick
Baker. In other words, the man has achieved enough to warrant being cut
some slack.

'Showdown in Little Tokyo' has such modest ambitions that you don't
want to rag on it too hard. In its own silly, sadistic way, it's
goofily watchable, despite some elements in both production and content
that induce the occasional cringe.
