A semi-interesting psychological horror film that makes use of some
good young American and English actors, “The Hole” is an adaptation of
the book, “After the Hole” by Guy Burt. Though it has a promising young
cast and an interesting premise, some of the twists are either a tad
too unbelievable or too easily seen coming for the film to be entirely
successful.

Based on the events in Prohibition-era Chicago in the 1930s, “The
Untouchables” tells the story of famous gangster Al Capone ( Robert De
Niro) and Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner), the treasury officer who, along
with his band of “Untouchables” (called so because they refused to take
bribes), eventually put Capone behind bars. Capone was one of the most
famous inmates at Alcatraz, who eventually died of syphilis while
incarcerated. The film begins with the introduction of Capone, who is
liked by the press and claims that he is not a violent man. Shortly
thereafter, there is a brief scene that demonstrates the violence that
has come to define the liquor wars of the ...

'North by Northwest' may not be quite at the top of the Hitchcock list,
but it's very high, and one of his most entertaining movies. Ernest
Lehman's script is mostly a means of getting Cary Grant from one
dangerous situation to another, but the dialog, in the old term,
sparkles, the cast is exceptional even by Hitchcock's standards, the
locations are gorgeously photographed, and it contains one of the
wildest, most suspenseful and spectacular sequences in any Hitchcock
movie -- in any movie, in fact. The "crop duster" scene is
unforgettable.

This TV movie remains one of Steven Spielberg’s best movies; it’s free
from the sentimentality that has harmed some of his later films, and
lacks the professional slickness that has also hindered some. It’s a
tight, beautifully-structured thriller; it has a simple, almost
elementary story, and one goal: to scare the bejabbers out of watchers.
It does this brilliantly. Its success is partly due, as the director
himself admits, to him being a very young man (25) when it was made.

The reputation (and to a degree, notoriety) of 'The Stepford Wives' has
certainly grown over the last 25 years. Even though it wasn't a
significant hit when it was first released, it did result in three TV
movie sequels. ('Revenge of the Stepford Wives,' which trashed the
premise, and probably inevitably, 'The Stepford Husbands' and 'The
Stepford Children.' I'm waiting breathlessly for 'The Stepford
Nannies.') Now it has been released in a somewhat skimpy but
well-produced DVD by the always-interesting Anchor Bay.
