Giving a truly unbiased review of Pink Floyd’s classic album Dark Side
of the Moon at this point in history is nearly impossible. To me, this
is one of the top five albums of all time and quite possibly the best
album ever to be made in the ‘70s. The Classic Album Series is a series
of documentaries on DVD that delves deep into the details of records
that we’ve all probably owned at one time or another. Spending 741
consecutive weeks on Billboard’s Top 200 list, this record by far has
spent more time on the charts by far than any other record released and
is considered by many audio enthusiasts to be one of the most important
albums in history, but do ...

“Chicago” won six Academy Awards – Best Picture, Supporting Actress
(Catherine Zeta-Jones), Editing, Sound, Costume Design and Art
Direction – and was nominated for another armload, including leading
lady Renee Zellweger, supporting actor John C. Reilly, supporting
actress Queen Latifah, screenwriter Bill Condon (adapted from the stage
musical by director/choreographer/writer Bob Fosse, writer/lyricist
Fred Ebb and composer John Kander, which was based on a play, which was
in turn based on an actual ‘20s court case) and director Rob Marshall.

While most people in American culture are certainly aware on one level
or another of college marching bands, most people probably don’t give a
lot of thought to what goes in to putting on the musical portion of a
university football half-time show (cheerleaders are another matter).
“Drumline,” among other things, does a good deal to wipe away our
ignorance on this point, becoming so fascinating it its details that it
elevates what could be just another “Rocky” wannabe movie into
something that is honestly engrossing and entertaining on its own terms.

It's hard to imagine any American over the age of, say, 15, who
wouldn't have seen "West Side Story" before now -- but if you're one of
that handful, or if it's one of your favorite movies, this two-disc
"Special Edition" DVD is the ideal means of adding it to your film
collection. The color is saturated and beautiful, the wide-screen
images (the film was shot in 70mm) are as handsome as they have ever
been on home video, and the superbly scored and mixed sound track, with
its numerous songs and dances, is reproduced well for home theater
systems.

This Hip-Hop-umentry never lets you forget that DJ QUIK (real name
David Blake) is from the streets of Compton. Heck, one of his biggest
songs is even called “Born And Raised In Compton.” You can take the guy
out of Compton, I guess, but you can never completely take the Compton
out of a gangsta like QUIK. Please don_t be fooled by “DJ QUIK:
Visualism”’s arts-y subtitle of “_The Art Of Sound Into Vision,”
because this DVD has more to do with thugs, drugs and 40 ounce chugs,
than with any kind of relevant music or culture.
