This performance DVD was filmed in March of 2004 at the Sodra Teatern
in Stockholm, Sweden, and captures the wonderfully quirky duo of Sparks
at its best. This sibling act, comprised of brothers Ron and Russell
Mael, has been making its perverse little brand of music since 1970,
and comes off here just as sarcastic, funny, smart and insightful as
ever.

“Dig!” began innocently enough as director Ondi Timoner’s attempt to
study a collection of new bands trying to make it in the L.A. music
scene. But during this inclusive filmmaking endeavor, two particular
groups stood out markedly from the pack. The first is The Dandy
Warhols, led by the quietly charismatic Courtney Taylor. The other
significant band, spearheaded by Anton Newcombe, is The Brian Jonestown
Massacre. The stories of these wonderfully-named bands makes for truly
fascinating documentary material and turn “Dig!” into must-see viewing
for any self-respecting rock music fan.

If you’ve ever attended a Morrissey concert, no doubt you’ve also
noticed the steady stream of fans, both male and female, that fight
their way onto the stage just to hug and be hugged by Morrissey. During
the performance documented on this DVD, which was filmed in the
artist’s English home country, not even one stage-seeker succeeds in
his or her flesh-pressing quest. But maybe this omission only enhances
the home viewer’s experience, since it is a concert DVD that focuses
solely on the man and his music, rather than the oddball culture that
surrounds his fame.

If you’re into modern country music at all, then you owe it to yourself
to watch this DVD. Gram Parsons was a renegade musician who embraced
both country music and rock ‘n’ roll, as well as R&B, in a time
when that wasn’t necessarily so cool. I mean, The Beatles and The
Rolling Stones would throw you bone or two of country riffs on an
album, but a whole album’s worth? The Grateful Dead certainly embraced
it more than most rock bands of the time did, but even they were always
first and foremost a rock band. But Parsons was ...

What the heck happened to Metallica? Although the scoreboard has them
perched high atop the charts as the highest-selling heavy metal band of
all time, seeing even just a few minutes of the band in the studio,
it’s obvious that the creative juices are gone. In “Some Kind of
Monster,” a shockingly imitative documentary by filmmakers Joe
Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, Metallica lets fans and critics into the
studio, their homes, their personal lives and more during the span of
several years that it took to record their latest album, titled St.
Anger.
