The Human League has lasted a lot longer than many of the other
synthesizer collectives from the ‘80s, primarily because Philip Oakey,
Susan Anne Sulley and Joanne Catherall sing real songs, instead of
merely creating ear-catching sounds. This new live release, which was
filmed at The Dome in Brighton, England, showcases many of this act’s
sturdy songs and thus exemplifies its staying power.

What we have here is a band filling a void. On September 1, 1990, the
Grateful Dead were to play a show at the Shoreline Amphitheatre
(Mountain View, CA), but in July of that year, Brent Mydland
(keyboardist for the Grateful Dead) unexpectedly passed away. Rather
than cancel the gig, Jerry Garcia brought his band to play at
Shoreline. Watching this reminds me of why I love Jerry’s music so
much. It’s not all about technique or how much of a virtuoso you are
with your instrument, but rather about how passionately and
introspectively you can play. If you want to watch a band play with
absolute perfection, then this isn’t the disc for you, but if you want
to see how the creative process works ...

Glenn Danzig is the former vocalist for the hardcore band The Misfits,
and he has been making shock rock since the late ‘70s. These days, his
music falls somewhere between black metal and Marilyn Manson. Thus his
music videos are a little bit like mini-horror movies. The big trouble
with such an out-there style, however, is that its subject matter isn’t
exactly the sort of soft sell sex usually presented on MTV. Instead,
it’s a little bit like Ozzy Osbourne, if the Ozz were actually truly
frightening and taken seriously.

At one memorable point here, Twisted Sister singer Dee Snider
compliments his Wacken, Germany audience -- and the community of heavy
metal fans in general -- on their steadfast loyalty. But in order to
slog though this double-sided, video/audio disc, you’d have to be
either a Twisted Sister diehard, a bad heavy metal junkie, or just
plain hard up for entertainment. Calling this project “entertainment,”
in fact, may be far too kind a word for it. Rather, this disc offers a
slightly better way to kill time than, say, suicide or self-mutilation.
But even if you chose “Live At Wacken” over your favorite method of
violent self-destruction, you might still end up punishing yourself
over such a poor decision. Simply ending it all might be a better move
than putting ...

“Cake Boy” is an odd little punk rock film. It tells the ironic story
of Selwyn (played by Warren Fitzgerald of The Vandals), who is a master
at decorating cakes for a creepy little exotic cake shop. But the art
of forming nipples on the tops of freaky desserts is not a fulfilling
career choice, so go figure. Furthermore, Selwyn’s girlfriend takes out
all her physical aggression upon this poor little chef. Selwyn decides
to leave his mean girl and dead end job behind to take up a new life as
a punk rock roadie. But this plan soon proves the truism that the grass
isn’t always greener on the other side. Ultimately, this is the story
of Selwyn’s various trials and errors, before he finally ...
