You have to hand it to director Roland Emmerich. The guy really knows
how to stage a battle scene. Whether it’s U.S. Army types blasting the
heck out of intrusive extraterrestrials in "Independence Day" or
Colonial militia going toe-to-toe with the Redcoats in "The Patriot,"
when Emmerich gets down and dirty with combat, our attention is well
and truly held. However, he doesn’t seem to be sure what temperature to
set for the calmer sections.

Based on the best-selling novel by Charles Frazier, “Cold Mountain” is
set during the U.S. Civil War, much of it taking place in the small
North Carolina town of Cold Mountain. Inman (Jude Law) has been off at
war for three-plus years. Waiting for him is Ada Monroe (Nicole
Kidman), the daughter of a minister (Donald Sutherland) who is not
equipped for rural life. Once the men leave for war and Monroe passes
away, Ada is forced to make due at the farm of Black Cove by herself.
Needless to say, she is ill-suited for the task and is forced to rely
on the kindness of others to help her through the first winter. A

Black comedies about the military are not common these days, and
really, never were. There's only a handful of good ones -- "MASH," "Dr.
Strangelove," "Apocalypse Now" -- which make their points clearly and
strongly, and which have a point of view. The war comedies that don't
have a point of view, like "Kelly's Heroes," can be entertaining but
also tend to leave a kind of sour taste in terms of ethics and morality.
"Buffalo Soldiers" is one of the latter. It debuted at a film festival
on September 7, 2001, and because of the events of the 11th, was
quickly put on the shelf by its American distributor, Miramax. ...

Mentioning the Space Race to today’s younger audience probably conjures
up images of spaceships lined up at some galactic gate, but in the
1950s and 1960s, the term had a much more significant, and more deadly,
implication. Two superpowers, the United States and the United Soviet
Socialist Republics, each fresh from the horror of World War II and
realizing that global domination by a superior military was possible,
set about staking out new battleground high above the Earth.
