Some movies age so gracefully that they might have been made at any
time between the present and the invention of sound and color. "Carrie"
is one of the rare films that fits this category – hairstyles and
clothing may have changed, but the agony of being an outsider in high
school, feeling like a freak, warring with an uncomprehending parent
and imagining what could happen if thoughts had immediate physical
consequences are all timeless. Writer Stephen King tapped into
something profound (not to mention launching the mother of all horror
fiction careers) when he penned his first novel; the cinematic
translation by director Brian DePalma and screenwriter Lawrence D.
Cohen takes King’s work and makes it sing – and scream.

In the mid-1930s, the combination of England's out-and-out ban on
horror movies, and the snarls of the various censorship groups in the
United States essentially brought the horror movie boom to a sudden
halt. But in 1938 or 39, a local Los Angeles theater paired "Dracula"
and "Frankenstein" -- and ended up with lines around the block, every
day. The double bill played across the country to similar results.

A few years ago, Universal Home Video released many of its horror
classics as well-produced DVDs. David J. Skal produced discs with loads
of extras, including commentary tracks, documentaries, trailers, and
other features. The titles including almost all the greatest horror
movies in the Universal library -- "Frankenstein," "Dracula," "The
Mummy," "The Invisible Man," etc. -- but only one, "Creature from the
Black Lagoon," of their 1950s sci-fi classics. And one sequel: "Bride
of Frankenstein."

"The Wicker Man" is a cult movie par excellence,
much more so than stuff like "Rocky Horror Picture Show," which was
always out there in front of everyone. Over a span of almost thirty
years, "The Wicker Man" slowly established its reputation; it could
hardly do otherwise, as it was so rarely shown anywhere. The
informative documentary, "The Wicker Man Enigma," included on the
"theatrical cut" disc of this DVD set, explains in interesting detail
how the film happened to fall through so many cracks.

Some copies also include a second DVD, featuring the documentary 'The
Many Faces of Christopher Lee' and two music videos with Lee.
What with many of Hammer's best films in the hands of distributors who
show little inclination to release them on DVD, it falls to Anchor Bay
to give us almost all the others, in their 'Hammer Collection.'
However, with the likes of 'Scars of Dracula,' they're beginning to
reach the bottom of the deep Hammer barrel.
