Certainly this reasonable but surprising combo package of the two best versions of Robert Louis Stevenson's "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" wasn't something we could have expected from Warners just two years ago. Especially considering the work that has been done on the 1931 version, with many scenes cut over the years ...

First, that anyone would have the sheer balls to give a movie a title this blatant. Secondly, by what the title promised -- gouts of blood, living victims dismembered by a roaring chainsaw, that sort of thing. Third, by the fact that it got favorable reviews. And finally, by discovering that it was NOT particularly gory.

He's a quiet, intelligent, good-humored man, hardly the type that stereotyping would insist should be the director of a string of horror movies. But it's precisely their intelligence that sets his best films not just above but apart from their rivals. He may make films with teenagers getting killed one by one, just like a lot of other slasher movies, but his are also about more than what's on the surface.

Scollay release year: 1982 film rating: Four stars reviewed by: Bill Warren Larry Cohen is one of the most interesting, if eccentric, filmmakers working in his chosen fields (SF/horror & crime, mostly); though he has been less active -- or interesting -- in recent years, he's left a body of work that will entertain and amuse people for years. He's only a mediocre director; his camera angles are clunky, his editing is often confusing, and his habit of filling out existing films with quickly-grabbed extra footage makes the films look alternately pretty slick and pretty crude. But his ideas have led to his being a major cult favorite among American moviegoers.
