The film has an excellent audio track, particularly the DTS version. However, what makes this DVD so crucial is that the audio commentary track includes the observations of a production team member seldom heard from in DVD supplements – the sound designer.

Emmet Walsh director: Charles Burnett film release year: 1994 DVD release year: 2005 film rating: Two Stars sound/picture rating: Two Stars reviewed by: Paul Lingas “The Glass Shield,” an 11-year-old crime drama from writer/director Charles Burnett, is raw around the edges, partly by design and partly because it feels slightly amateurish. Rereleased by Miramax under the auspices of a Collector’s Edition DVD, the film does have an interesting premise and some decent writing, but mostly feels somewhat poorly executed. Ice Cube is now featured as a major player in both the trailer and packaging, but in reality he has one of the smallest roles in the film. It’s too bad that this DVD feels less like a collector’s edition and more like an afterthought.

title: The Godfather Part II studio: Paramount Home Video MPAA rating: R starring: Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, Robert De Niro, John Cazale, Talia Shire, Lee Strasberg, Michael V. Gazzo, G.D. Spradlin, Richard Bright, Gastone Moschin, Bruno Kirby, Morgana King release year: 1974 film rating: Five Stars sound/picture: Four Stars reviewed by: Bill Warren All during the making of "The Godfather," director/co-writer Francis Ford Coppola was worried that he might be yanked off the film at any moment, or that the film would be taken away from him once it was finished, and edited by unfriendly hands. But when "The Godfather" became a historically-significant smash hit, Coppola was immediately wooed by Paramount to make a sequel.

Castellano, Talia Shire, Al Lettieri, Richard Conte, John Marley, Morgana King, Simonetta Stefanelli release year: 1972 film rating: Five Stars sound/picture: Four Stars reviewed by: Bill Warren Making "The Godfather" was very difficult for Francis Ford Coppola; the studio had little confidence in him on any level, and were pressing ahead primarily because between the time they bought the rights to Mario Puzo's novel and when production began, it became a major best seller. Paramount's original intent was to set it in the present day, and in Kansas City. It was Coppola, better regarded as a writer than as a director, who insisted on a period, New York setting, just as in the book.

The script by David McKenna and Nick Cassavetes, based on Bruce Porter’s book, is credible and interesting, and Ted Demme’s direction is lively if fairly straightforward. The one caveat is that nothing very surprising happens, which is a little odd, given the dramatic nature of George’s adventures. Not only does the first-person narration indicate that George has survived and is now in jail, but there are no ...
