Near as I can tell, Sean Penn wants to be Dustin Hoffman.
In "I Am Sam," Penn channels not one but two of Hoffman's most
memorable characters as he portrays Sam Dawson, a borderline autistic
with the emotional maturity of a seven-year-old and an obsessive love
of the Beatles. After a run-in with a hooker, Sam finds himself
fighting for custody of his seven-year-old daughter Lucy in a script
that is equal parts "Rainman" and "Kramer vs. Kramer." Michelle
Pfeiffer co-stars as Rita, his caffeine-addicted, high-powered but
emotionally stunted lawyer, and newcomer Dakota Fanning plays Lucy, a
wise little girl forced to act as parent to her mentally challenged
father. Dianne Wiest has ...

With its heart in the right place and its funny bone nearby (if muted),
‘Patch Adams’ is an agreeable man-against-the-system tale. If it’s not
exactly "inspiring" (as the box blurb claims), it is often funny,
consistently well-made and usually engaging.

Fast Eddie Felson (Paul Newman) is a pool hustler who’s determined to
make his mark on greatness. That search for self-actualization leads
him to Ames Pool Hall in New York City where he meets up with pool
legend Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason). Felson is absolutely the best
pool shooter who ever lived, but he’s got fatal flaws: his own ego and
insecurities. His foray at taking the cash and the title from Minnesota
Fats rips away Eddie’s confidence and leaves him torn apart. Licking
his wounds, Eddie finds a young woman named Sarah (Piper Laurie), who
has her own dark secrets. Together, these two incomplete people help
each other find their way back to health and happiness. But there’s a
devil waiting in the ...

"The Temp" is in reality a theatrical release, but one can be forgiven
for thinking it was made for TV. After all, this kind of thriller,
although fairly common in theatres in the ‘70s and early ‘80s, is now
mostly relegated to the small screen. It’s down to a formula: Person A
is trying to get his or her life together after making some bad
decisions. Person B shows up and is incredibly helpful. Then Person B
does some things that make Person A vaguely suspicious, with Person B
seeming more and more ominous as the story continues.
