‘Running on Empty’ is an intelligent drama with a lot on its mind.
While it revolves around an extreme version of parental separation
anxiety, it also encompasses a variety of ethical conundrums while
being tender, often surprisingly funny and even suspenseful.

'Apollo 13' remains Ron Howard's best movie as a director, compelling,
well-acted, deeply involving and tightly focussed on its story, the
near-disaster of the Apollo 13 moon voyage. Even on home video, this
movie -- which like most big-scale films, still works better in
theaters no matter how good your system -- retains its power and
suspense. And the latter is Howard's finest accomplishment: the whole
world knows that through a combination of luck, skill, training,
ingenuity and focussed attention, the three Apollo 13 astronauts
returned safely to Earth. But the movie still manages to be
nail-bitingly suspenseful from almost the beginning until Tom Hanks'
summing-up voiceover at the end.
It's so engrossing as to be nearly hypnotic, with strong but
self-effacing ...

1990's Oscar winner for Best Picture 'Dances With Wolves' is almost
everything one can ask from an epic film: it's emotionally stirring
without being sentimental, powefully acted and stunningly beautiful to
look at--credit here to cinematographer Dean Semler, who creates the
West of our dreams for the camera. Since its release, there has been
something of a backlash against the popularity of 'Dances' and its
director/star/producer (with Jim Wilson) Kevin Costner. Don't let the
anti-hype or the post-'Prince of Thieves' Costner-bashing get to you.
This is one instance where the initial acclaim is deserved.

'Stand and Deliver' has always seemed rather like a very smart,
well-made TV movie, an impression that is greatly enhanced when it is
viewed on the small screen. A fact-based story of academic achievement
in the face of enormous odds, 'Stand and Deliver' is often quite
entertaining, no mean feat for a story that is in the broad strokes
David vs. Goliath but is specifically about high school math class.

Director John G. Avildsen began with independent films and scored a big
hit with Joe in 1970; his next few films were anything but hits,
including the well-regarded (but not by me) Save the Tiger in 1973. He
was considered a kind of satirist, but couldn't seem to find his
footing after Tiger -- at least not until he was hired to direct a
screenplay written by a young actor who stubbornly refused to sell the
script unless he himself played the title role. This was Rocky, and its
terrific success validated Avildsen, for a while. But since he simply
is not a very good director, just competent, his career slowly declined
-- until The Karate Kid ...
