They don’t make movies like "Rat Race" anymore: large ensemble
screwball comedies packed with sight gags, frenetic pace, and an
all-star cast on the zany road trip from hell in pursuit of untold
riches. Of course, there's a reason why they don't make movies like
this any more. However, luckily for all of us, "Rat Race" has more in
common with "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" (upon which it is loosely
based) than "Cannonball Run" and its ilk.

There is something voyeuristic about watching "The Anniversary Party",
a drama starring and written and directed by Alan Cumming and Jennifer
Jason Leigh. The duo cast the movie almost entirely with their friends
and shot on location for almost three weeks in a glass house in the
Hollywood Hills. While the story -- the sixth wedding anniversary party
of actress Sally who has recently reunited with writer husband Joe --
is fiction, the performances and script are very raw and real. And
there is a reason Joe and Sally live in a glass house.
The party guests include each of the spouses' single best friends --
Sally runs to ...

The two "American Pie" films – both the 1999 original and its 2001
sequel – should be given special mention whenever the American teen sex
comedy is under discussion. The "Pie" films manages to accomplish what
its peers strive for but all too seldom achieve, namely true comedic
outrageousness. The "Pies" also generate some elements that other
movies in the genre seem to go out of their way to avoid: an air of
genuine warmth that translates into sincere compassion for all of the
characters, a refusal to make females look stupid and/or like ...

“The Princess Diaries” is a very well executed, reasonably charming
comedy aimed squarely at females in their teen years and younger. Based
on a book by Meg Cabot, the film tells of nerdy, unpopular but sweet
San Francisco high school student Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway),
being raised by her single mom (Caroline Goodall) in bohemian warmth,
who one day is summoned to meet the paternal grandmother she’s never
met (Mom and Dad were divorced early and Dad died in a car accident
before Mia could really know him). Grandma turns out to be Queen
Clarisse of Genovia (Julie Andrews), whose only son was Mia’s father –
which makes Mia heir to the throne of a whole country. ...

John Landis likes to describe his great struggle to break into movies.
There was his uncle, see, playing golf with his best friend, Darryl F.
Zanuck; Landis' uncle says, "I got this crazy nephew wants to get a job
in the movies...." And soon Landis was working in the 20th Century-Fox
mail room.
